Back in 2009, pubs were facing the double whammy of the credit crunch and smoking ban. Then, pubs were closing at an average of 50 a week. Five years later, the decline has slowed but, even so, pubs are still caught in the much longer-term social and economic forces which shape the way British people currently live, drink and socialise.

UK Guest Houses lead the way
Once derided as old-fashioned, it seems UK guest houses are beating the competition once again. Earlier this year, a Dorset B&B was named the best in the world in Trip Advisor’s annual Travellers’ Choice Awards. Bindon Bottom, a five-room bed and breakfast in Dorset, took the top spot, fighting off stiff competition from establishments in leading destinations such as California and Thailand.

No overnight fix for UK Lending problems
An article in the Sunday Times on the 18th August 2013 reported that Britain’s most senior bank regulator, Andrew Bailey, highlighted why it might be difficult to encourage lending: “Banks have moved from a lending model concentrated on property to one ‘ based on “evidence of a business plan that indicates returns to the firm that will repay borrowing”.
UK bank lending plummets by £300m
According to an article in The Sunday Times on 18th August 2013, many companies are still nervous about overstretching on loans. Lending by British banks fell by £300M in the first three months of 2013, despite attempts by the Government and the Bank of England to encourage lenders to make more loans.
